In December 1914, Sir Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven men set sail on the Endurance toward the South Pole, with the goal of crossing Antarctica, the last unexplored continent, by land. A month later, the ship became trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea, unable to reach land, near the Antarctic Circle. Shackleton and his men survived adrift in one of the most inhospitable regions of the world before abandoning the ship and embarking on a journey of more than 2,000 kilometers to reach the nearest outpost of civilization.
The odyssey of Shackleton and his crew is one of the most incredible of the twentieth century. Alfred Lansing had access to the expedition members’ diaries and met several of the survivors. The willpower and energy demonstrated by this group of men in their titanic struggle against the unleashed forces of nature surpassed the known limits of human endurance.
